Schedule your workouts
Most of us will keep a calendar of our appointments throughout the week (at least the important ones). Put your workouts in your calendar just like everything else! Keep the mindset that once something is on your calendar that it is chiseled in stone. The appointments in on your calendar are not optional.
Fitness classes are a great way to help keep the new or renewed commitment to yourself. Classes have a definitive start and stop time which will help you get out the door and home at a set time. Ask the instructor if it’s okay to arrive a little late or leave a little early. Good instructors will understand that everyone has a busy life and this is just something that happens in life.
Personal trainers are the best way to get the new figure you are wanting. A good trainer will do more than just kick your butt. Your trainer should text you reminders, help you figure out the best days and times to workout working within your schedule. Some trainers will even charge you for missing an appointment. This will keep you from ditching your workouts for other activities.
Variety in your workouts
Exercise programs have a shelf life. Most of us know that an exercise program needs to changed up often. Here are a couple of reasons:
- Your body will quickly get used to an exercise routine. Results in a workout done over and over again will decline and lead to frustration and/or quitting. The maximum lifespan of an exercise routine is 90 days. It’s best to change up even great routines sooner though. Changing your workout plan every week will keep the results coming for a long time.
- A repetitive exercise program will feel stale. Once you begin to get bored with your workouts your motivation will drop. Low motivation means wine with a friend or catching up on you favorite show will win over going the the gym. Change things up regularly. The best classes and trainers will have a fresh workout every time. If you are bored with your workouts look for something new.
Have your bag packed in advance
We have all had the frustration of arriving at the gym to find that our shoes (or something) have been left at home. Now we have likely just flushed the day's workout down the drain. This is the worst!
Pack your exercise bag the night before and put it in front of the door you walk out of each morning. Leaving the entire bag at home is just as frustrating. The added step of going home first gives you time to think about all the other things on your “to do list”. There are enough things that can go wrong in your day… eliminate this one. Also, by having all the necessary things ready to exercise will help to make the decision to get to the gym more resolute in your mind. The small step of having all the necessary things in one place and ready to go can make difference between success and failure.
